Painful PMS? Try taking an Epsom Salt Bath!

dandelion-wish

For almost half of us women, the list of unwelcome guests that arrive each month with our periods feels unending. Irritability, bloating, fatigue, body aches, insomnia, indigestion, headaches, anxiety and depression are the 'all-to-familiar' symptoms, and they can disrupt everything. 10-15% of us experience pain so severe that it debilitates our normal daily lives. If this sounds like you, you're not alone. Symptoms of PMS are the leading cause of school and work absences among otherwise healthy women in their late teens and early 20's.

For those of you who don't like to pop fistfuls of pain relievers that work temporarily at best, we at Shepard Moon have a healthier suggestion for you. Take a bath! Mix 4 cups of Epsom salt with our 'Gal Pal PMS Relief Bath' and you may just discover a new best friend. This tried and true natural formula has been a favorite among younger women with painful PMS as well as us 'Wisdom-aged Women' going through menopause!

How it works

We begin with Geranium, Clary Sage, Lavender, Sandalwood and Frankincense organic essential oils then mix them into our mineral salt blend of Epsom Salt, Dead Sea Salt, Dendritic Salt and Baking Soda. Adding an additional 4 cups of Epsom Salt to your bath can really help reduce painful cramping. Many of our faithful customers agree:The combination of mineral bath hydrotherapy and essential oils is a naturally effective remedy for alleviating the irritating symptoms you may experience each month.

Physically, hydrotherapy brings relief by the simple immersion of your body in water. Through this hydrostatic pressure your body's blood flow is quickly improved by moving extra cellular fluids out of your cells and muscle tissue and into your bloodstream. Improved blood flow improves everything and especially when it comes to reducing pain.

Magnesium is the key to pain relief

Magnesium, which is what Epsom salts are (magnesium sulfate), is one of the most important minerals our bodies need to function. The other wonderful attribute about magnesium is that it's a powerful muscle relaxant, reducing or even eliminating cramping. When I was in private practice, I would recommend not only baths heavily laced with Epsom salts, but also taking extra magnesium supplements to relieve severe cramping and pain.

A powerful blend of essential oils

Geranium is one of my favorite essential oils. It's nurturing and calming yet with a vast array of physical benefitsClary Sage enjoys many of the same benefits as Geranium plus it is an effective soft muscle relaxant and natural sedative. These valuable qualities make this essential oil vital in quieting symptoms of PMS, hormone imbalance and menstrual cramping.

Most people think of Lavender when talking about essential oils. This oil, most widely known for its sedative and calming properties, is also psychologically uplifting and balancing. Not as commonly talked about, Lavender can help reduce blood clotting, and the bloating that occurs with periods.

Rounding out our Gal Pal blend are Sandalwood and Frankincense. You'll find that I use these sacred oils in many of our Shepard Moon products. I do this because they are wonderful blending oils that enhance, sustain, and deepen the aromatic qualities of the oils they are blended with, making the overall blend more aesthetically pleasing. They are an unassuming foundation for healing, but they have been trusted for their meditative properties by yogis and rishis for centuries. As my own meditation practice has become the firm bedrock of my day, so too, have these sacred oils become a bedrock for many of our remedies.

If you suffer from PMS or menopause and are looking for a tried and true natural relief, try Shepard Moon's Gal Pal PMS Relief bath and add some extra Epsom salts. Join a powerful group of women who have made this dynamic duo part of their monthly self-care rituals. We think you'll be happy you did!
